Welcome November!

       Folklore has it that a heavy November snow will last until April; that thunder in November means a fertile year to come; and flowers in bloom in late Autumn indicate a bad Winter.

     Hopefully, everyone took the opportunity to vote and have your say at the polls.

     Do you know which president received the greatest number of electoral votes?  It was Ronald Reagan, in the 1984 election, with a whopping 525 out of 538 available electoral votes.

     Veterans Day is coming up on Monday, November 11, and at 11 am that day, a program will be underway on the Vienna City Library lawn, sponsored by the Daniel Chapman Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).  The public is urged to attend this patriotic event that honors our veterans.

     In Canada, November 11 is recognized as “Remembrance Day.”

     A  “CASA Bash” will be held on Nov. 9, 2-5pm at “The Hub” Recreation Center on West Main in Marion, with fun events for all ages, in this fundraiser for CASA.

     To make holiday decorations, for free, attend the Saturday, Nov. 30 event at 9am or the Dec. 14 event, also at 9am, at the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.

     “The Third Thursday” will be on Nov. 21 on Tower Square Plaza in downtown Marion, with free entertainment, fun, food and prizes, for all ages.

     The Eagle House Ministries will again provide a Thanksgiving Feast on Thursday, Nov. 28, with meals delivered or enjoyed at the site on Route 37 north of Buncombe.  Volunteers can call 618-658-0099 to offer their help in cooking and serving.

     The River-to-River Trail Society is offering a hike on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Cove Hollow at Cedar Lake in Jackson County, with Cathy Jennings as leader.  Call for reservations for this free event at 618-759-1924.  Meet at 10am at the trailhead at Cedar Lake.

     Learn more about Alzheimer’s disease on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6pm at the Little Egypt Arts Association Centre in downtown Marion.

     Also coming up at the LEAA Centre will be “Glass Classes” to create holiday decorations, on Nov. 16 and 22 at 10am and Nov. 15 and 21 at 4pm.  The cost of $45 will include all supplies.

     The “Rekindling the Spirit Youth Rally” for this month, will be held at the Ozark Baptist Church on Nov. 20, with food served at 6:30pm, followed by the worship service at 7pm.  All area youth and their grownups are welcome.

     Mark your December calendar for Sunday, Dec. 1, at 5:30pm for the “Very Merry Christmas Parade” on Tower Square Plaza” in downtown Marion.  This promises to be a “Hallmark Moment” with lighted floats, a visit with Santa Claus,  and candy canes galore.

     A ladies night out is the “Purse-n-Allity Auction” on Nov. 7 at 6pm at the Herrin Civic Center, with hors d’ oeuvres and drinks, and an auction for designer purses and more.

     At the Carson Center in Paducah on Sunday, Nov. 10 will be “ZZ Top Elevation” and on Tuesday, Nov. 21, will be the “Tina Turner Musical” onstage.

     The Knight Welding Shop, located north of Pulley’s Mill, continues to expand and now offers new self-storage units ready for customers.

     The True Vine pick-up or home delivery from the Vienna United Methodist Church will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 9, 4:30-5:30pm, with a menu of turkey and dressing casserole with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls, green

 beans, and dessert.  Call for meals at 618-926-1468.

     Fifty years of women’s sports at Vienna High School will be celebrated on Nov. 16, during “Meet the Eagles.”  A dinner and reception will be held at 5pm in the upper gym.  My cousin, Trina Moake Kressley, of Cypress, and now of Richardson, 

Texas, was on the first softball and basketball Lady Eagles teams, back in 1974.

     Another shopping op will be held in Cobden on Saturday, Nov. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 21, 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and 1-4pm on Sundays, located in the Union County Museum.

     The American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 18, noon to 5:45pm at Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna.  Walk-ins are welcome! Or, make an appointment by calling 618-342-6861.  Banterra Bank of Vienna is providing door prizes and the Tunnel Hill Community of Christ Church will provide home-made baked desserts.  Please give life-saving blood that is so needed.

     “The Hub Recreational Center” of Marion will host a farmers’ market, indoors, through March, every first Friday, 3-5 pm in the gym, with a diverse array of vendors, as well as two outstanding food trucks onsite from 4-7pm.

     John A. Logan College will “Salute the 

Veterans” and present “Home for The Holidays” on Nov. 8-10, with a musical celebration, presented by the college choirs.  Performances are set for Friday, Nov. 8 at 7pm; Saturday, Nov. 9 at noon; and Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2pm, all in the O’Neill Auditorium.  Tickets are $5 at the door.

     Also underway at JALC will be their annual arts and crafts expo on Nov. 9-10, on Saturday at 10am to 4pm and on Sunday, 10am to 4pm.  Entry fee is $5, with students for free.

     Volunteering at the Goreville Ministerial Alliance Thrift Shop was our church, the Tunnel Hill Community of Christ members.  It was good to visit with so many shoppers from so many different places.  Volunteers for this week will be from the Lick Creek Pentecostal Church.

     The GMA annual Christmas bazaar will open on Saturday, November 30 at 8am, and continue during thrift shop hours through Dec. 19.

     Volunteers at the Faith Alive Thrift Shop in Vienna on Nov. 14-16 will be members of the Vienna United Methodist Church.

     The Johnson County HCE will hold a bake sale on Nov. 25 and 26 during a basketball tournament at the Vienna High School and will take place in The Commons, 6-9pm.

     On Dec. 1, a chili supper will be held at the 

Goreville school cafeteria, 5-7pm .by the Johnson County HCE, with traditional chili and chicken chili, along with cornbread, drinks and dessert, as well as hot dogs and chips.  These two fundraisers will help pay for the scholarships given to a senior from each of  the county high schools each year.

     I hope all our readers remembered to “fall back” and turn their time pieces back an hour on 

Saturday evening and enjoyed getting an extra hour of sleep.

     The Full Moon will appear on Nov, 15!
