          “In like a lamb, out like a lion” so goes the weather of March, according to the old wives’ tale, and sometimes vica versa.  We shall see!

     March is named for Mars, the Roman God of War.  This was the season that the ancient military 

campaigns resumed after being interrupted by Winter weather.

     Coming up this month we will enjoy Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday, the Lenten season, March Madness on the basketball floors, St. Patrick’s Day, the arrival of Daylight Savings Time, the first day of Spring,  Wow!  Are we ready for all these dates?

     In our family, our great-granddaughter, Rehgen Castellano will celebrte her birthday on the 4th, while another great-grand, Nicole Barnaby, will have hers on the 18th, and a granddaughter-in-law, Maddie Smith, will also have hers on the 4th, and our daughter, Susanne Terry, will have a March 14 birthday.  Happy birthday y’all.

     The birthstone for March is the Aquamarine and the flower of the month is the Jonquil.

     Some days to acknowledge this first week of March, include:  Mar. 3—I Want You to be Happy Day.  Mar. 4–Day of Unplugging/  Mar. 7–Eat Your Cereal Day.   And, the first week is National American Chocolate Week.

     Have you noticed?  The days are growing longer, the birds are arriving, temperatures are rising,  and the daffodils are pushing through the soggy soil.  Can Spring be far behind?

     The full moon of March will be sighted on the 14th and is known as the Full Worm Moon,  as well as the Full Eagle Moon, the Full Sore Eye Moon, the Full Sugar Moon, and the Full Wind Strong Moon, thanks to the early Amrican Indians.

     The new moon will make its appearance on March 29.

     The River-to-River Trail Society has planned ten hikes for the upcoming season, including on March 8, Grindstaff Hollow in Gallatin County.  Call 618-499-9629.  And on March 16, Jackson Falls in Pope County.  Call 618-534-8139.  These are free and open to the public.  Call ahead for resevations.

     The Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois has its next flight financed by “Rocking For A Cause”, who provided a check for $112,000 for the Tuesday, May 6, Mission #14 for 88 veterans to spend the day in Washington, D.C.

     The True Vine meal pick-up of the Vienna United Methodist Church will be held on Saturday, March 8, 4:30-5:30pm at the rear entrance of the church.  Drive up and pick up.  The menu will include chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes, broccoli Normandy and a dessert, all for free by calling 618-926-1468 and leaving a message.

     A new arrival on Jan. 17 was Henry, born to Montanna and Gunnar Halstead of Goreville.  Grandparents are Brian and Jamie Albright.

     Another new arrival on the same date was a son, Archie. born to Breanna and Drew Trovillion, also of Goreville.

     The Shawnee Forest paintings of Abraham Hunter, who grew up in Vienna and Goreville, will be displayed at the Morris Library on the SIU-C campus through the month of March in the first floor rotunda.  A reception was held on March 1 with the artist in attendance.  This is free and open to the public.  Abraham’s mother, Karla Hunter, lives in Goreville.

     On March 8, Rodney Carrington Live, will appear at The Carson Center in Paducah.  On March 14, “A Taste of Ireland” with songs and dances ,will be seen at The Carson Center.

     On March 12, “Mikado” will be seen at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center.

     Congratulations to these couples who are celebrating wedding anniversaries:  Kelly and Holly Mount on March 5!  Tim and Cheryl Gage on March 5!  Lorna and Steve Frances on March 6 !

     The Hub Recreation Center of Marion will be celebrating its 10th anniversary  this month with a special event on Friday, March 7, 3-6pm, free and open to the public with food and giveaways.

     To celebrate the Feb. 8 birthday of Dave Duringer and the Feb. 14 birthday of Amy Perry-Duringer, their clan gathered on a Sunday at the Eagle Point Bay home of Karen and Nadia Boner for a day of fun and food.

     LeAnn Rimes will be seen in concert on April 17 at 7pm at the Marion Cuktural and Civic Center.  Tickets start at $49,99 and can be ordered at either ilshows.com or marionccc.com.

     The Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society will meet on Sunday, March 16 at 2:30pm in the community room of the Vienna Public Library.  This is free and open to the public.    

     The American Red Cross blood drive will be held on Monday, March 17, at 12-6pm at the Fellowship Baptist Church.in Vienna, Walk-ins are welcome. 

     Volunteers on March 4-6-8 at the Goreville Ministerial Alliance thrift shop will be members of the Goreville United Methodist Church and Busby Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.  

     Daylight Savings Time  begins on March 9, so spring ahead on your time pieces.

    A Posh Home and Garden Show will be held on Friday, March 14, 4-8pm and Saturday, March 15, 9am to 5:30pm at the Paducah Expo Center.

     “The Anchor” newsletter is again being distributed to Lake of Egypt Association of Property Owners  members.

     The new president of LEAPO is Vonda Roedel of Deer Ridge, where she lives with her husband, Ed.  She replaces Leroy Pfaltzgraf who served for three years.

     From their aluminum can recycling project, LEAPO  was able to donate $1700 to the Elks for their 4th of July fireworks on the lake.  LEAPO also donated $2000 to each of the Goreville and Marion Ministerial Alliances in December.
