If Punxatawny Phil’s prediction of six more weeks of nasty Winter weather hold true, (and he could be wrong you know,) keep those boots and heavy coats handy, just in case.
Spring is weeks away and I can hardly wait for sunshine and light breezes drifting in my open windows.
In th meantime, we can enjoy celebrating, or at least, recognizing these special days of February. Feb.9–Pizza Day. Feb. 12–Lunar New Year’s Day. Feb. 13–Cheddar Cheese Day. Feb. 14–Valentine’s Day. Feb. 16–Do A Grouch A Favor Day. Feb. 17–Presidents; Day.
I heard that some local folks were in New Orleans for Super Bowl Sunday for the contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. I really didn’t have a favorite team and know nothing about football, but I had the TV on, while reading a good book.
To pass the long winter days, sign up for the stained glass class at the Little Egypt Arts Association Centre in Marion. Contact [email protected] for either Feb. 18 at 4pm or Feb. 20 at 10am. The cost is $45 which includes all materials. Each class is about 4 hours long.
Local Girl Scouts are busy selling their famous cookies, with booths open around Southern Illinois. Call 800-345-6858 for locations.
“The Hub” Recreation Center will welcome customers to their farmers’ market on the first Friday of March, 3-6pm, with a variety of produce and crafts, inside the gym, with food trucks outside.
The Illinois Department of Public Health will celebrate American Heart Month through February.
Coming up on March 2 will be the Academy Awards on ABC-TV at 7pm.
The “Gnome Roam” will continue at Giant City State Park through Feb. 15. Take your camera and register at The Visitor Center to look for gnomes along the trails.
Another March event, especially for shoppers, will be the “Shoporama” at The Pavilion in Marion on Saturday, March 1, 10am to 5pm. Over one hundred vendors will be manning booths indoors. There will also be alpacas, food trucks and more.
Valentine’s Day became popular back in the Middle Ages, when the climate in Europe was warmer than it is now. Birds were mattng, flowers blooming, and love was blossoming with Springtime in mid-February.
From the Goreville First Pentecostal Church comes word of their “Game Night” that will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15, 7-10 pm in the fellowship hall, with games for teens and free pizza and soda. All area youth are welcomed. The church will also be hosting a Youth Revival on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7pm, followed by refreshments. Everyone is welcome!
“Into the Woods” will be presented at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center on Feb. 28-Mar. 2. And, on Mar. 12 “Mikado” will be presented.
Seen on Feb. 2 were the residents of Hillview Senior Living and Rehab enjoying National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day and National Dark Chocolate Day on another February day. Some fun!
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held on Monday, March 17, noon to 6pm, at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna. Please give!
