Hurricane season is upon us, with Helena and Milton striking with full force. doing considerable damage in the southern part of the country.
Our families in Florida all stayed safe and sound in their homes with a minimum of wind damage.
Several electrical workers from Southern Illinois have been sent south to restore power in communities that were hit hard by Milton and the accompanying tornadoes.
Keep in mind the Fort Massac Encampment on Oct. 19-20 at Fort Massac State Park, 10am to 5pm, both days, with any number of historical events, as they celebrate the 50th year of this re-creation of American history.
That same weekend, the “Fall Colors at the Cross” will take place at Bald Knob Cross near Alto Pass, on Saturday, at 10am to 5pm and on Sunday, at 1-5pm. There will be music, food trucks, bouncy houses, face painting, balloon art, and games for all ages. Nate’s B-B-Q, along with chili and hot dogs will be available to purchase at the visitor center. And, viewing the fall colors that surround the site for miles around will be free.
This Saturday, Oct. 12, the Cypress Village Park will be the site of an all-day flea market.
The Little Egypt Chorus will present “Broadway to Barbershop” on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2pm at the Market Street Conservatory in Marion. Call for tickets at 618-571-6424.
The Rekindling the Spirit Youth Rally will take place on Oct. 16 at 6:30pm, when food will be served, followed by the worship service at 7pm. All area youngsters and their grownups are urged to attend at the Mt. Zion Church near Buncombe.
October 14 is Columbus Day!
On Saturday, Oct. 12, at 6:30pm, there will be an outdoor movie at “The Word” Church on Taft Street in Marion, with free refreshments. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the evening.
The Cypress Grade School Fall Festival will be underway on Saturday, Oct. 19, with a chili supper served at 5-7pm; games, an auction and haunted house at 6-8pm; and a trunk or treat, by the teachers, at 5:30-6:30pm.
The Potter’s House Christian Center will hold six services on Oct. 13-17, at 11am and 6:30pm on Sunday, and at 7pm on Mon.-Thur. with Evangelist Steve Nicodemus holding miracle healing at each service, at 1214 East DeYoung Street in Marion.
Vienn High School Student Council and Youth For Christ students visited the Buncombe School, bringing pizza and beverages, to assist in honoring the memory of 6th grader, Brayden Ames, whose life was taken the previous Sunday in a recreational vehicle accident.
The Goreville Community-Wide Yard Sales will be this Saturday, Oct. 12, with bargains galore all around town.
“Experience VHS Night” will be on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 4-6pm with fun activities, free dinner, coffee bar samples, and tons of prizes, open to students, parents, teachers, staff, alumni, and anyone interested in VHS.
Volunteers at the Goreville Ministerial Alliance Thrift Shop on Oct. 15-17-19 will be members of the Grange Hall Church. Stop and shop!

October 11 is National I Love You Day!
Mark your date book for “Caregiver Retreat Day” on Friday, Nov. 1. 10am-2pm at Cornerstone Church on Walton Way in Marion. This is to show appreciation to all those who care for someone, without pay. Pre-registration is required for this free event by calling 618-993-9138. Lunch will be provided, with special speakers, mini-golf, manicures, chair yoga, massages and line dancing, plus door prizes. Wear a costume for competition and prizes.
Halloween is on the way and a number of events are coming up!
On Saturday, Oct. 26, 5-7pm a trunk or trest will be held at the campground of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
The 8th annual Marion Police Department “Spooktacular” will be held at the Mountain Dew Park on Saturday, Oct. 26, 5-8pm with events for children and adults. There will be food trucks, a carnival and much more. Everyone is welcome!
In Anna, the “Fluorescent Circus Freaks” will be held every Friday and Saturday, as well as Oct. 28-29-30-31 at the Shawnee Hills Art Center on Davie Street.
SIU-C will sponsor a “Haunted Hollow” a family-friendly Halloween Festival at Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center on Oct. 20, at 11am to 4pm, located about 8 miles south of Carbondale, on Giant City Road. An eclectic mix of
thrills and activities for the entire family will be underway, along with food to purchase.
The Southern Illinois Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will hold a “Halloween Extravaganza” on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 6:30pm with free admission, at Shryock Auditorium on the SIU-C campus. Haunted classical organ music by local musicians will be presented. Costumes are requested, but not required.
The Marion Carnegie Library will present a “Spooky Movie Double Feature” on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 4pm, with candy, popcorn and a spooky movie treat for youngsters and their adults, all for free.
At the Marion Cultural and Civic Center the “Rocky Horror Show Live” will be presented onstage on Oct. 31-Nov. 2, an adult presentation. Tickets can be ordered at marionccc.com.
On October 31, “Safe Night” at 5-8pm will be held on the back parking lot of the Vienna United Methodist Church for all area youngsters.
