LOOKING BACK September 20,1995

     In the September 20,1995, edition of the local newspaper, the students in grades 1-8 are holding a sales campaign, with proceeds going for the purchase of new cafeteria chairs.

     A traffic accident occurred on State Route 37, north of Goreville, when a tractor-trailer, driven by Russel Wangsness, 35, of Wisconsin. struck a piece of construction equipment, operated by Woody Davie, 58, of Herrin  Emergency  responders from Goreville Fire and Rescue treated Davie, who sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized.

     Several Goreville High students  were in Carbondale, to see President Bill Clinton. although there was such a crowd that their view was limited.

     Pictured were Rev. Murrell and Lois McGowan, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 1 at their home with their family.  They were wed on Sept. 29, 1935, at Gilead Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Simpson by Rev. John Hill.

     The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department raided five marijuana patches. taking in fifty plants.  There were no arrests made, but the plants were destroyed by burning, said Sheriff Faulkner.

     Trustees present at the recent village board meeting were: Mayor Bill Durham, Don Kerley, Larry Vaughn, Steve Benard.  Absent were Roy Byrd, Tim Gage, and Greg Hutchison.  Treasurer Judy Maze and Clerk Beverly Henson were also present.

     The Eagle Point Bay Crime Watch Committee will host a meeting on “Help Stop Crime” on Sept. 22 at 7pm at the Goreville Senior Citizens Center, with guest speakers being Sheriff Elry Faulkner, 9-11 Co-Ordinator Brent Schierbaum, State’s Attorney Dale Grasher, Lake Egypt Fire Chief Norm Ruth.

     20th anniversary wishes to Herman Dale and Betty Pritchett, who celebrated on August 20.

     Chester Schierbaum of Semmes, Alabama, was home over the weekend visiting his mother, Gertrude Schierbaum and attending the family reunion.

     Nine residents identified correctly the Mystery Photo of last week, who was Jackie Sullivan.  The name of Roger Craig was drawn from those of Bea Wood, Helen Stokes, Ramona Craig, Clarence Perry, Cecile Morgan, Sherry Durham, Paul Wood, and Lloyd Craig.

     Roger was the winner of two plate lunch specials from Triple E Bar-B-Que of Lake of Egypt.

     Jackie Lee Sullivan was born in a home delivery in Happy Hollow near Goreville, on Jan. 27, 1952, to Ray and Freeda Malier Sullivan.  He has two brothers, Delbert, Goreville, and Kenneth, deceased, and two sisters, Pauline McNeeley, Goreville, and Jeraldine Guardner, West Frankfort.

     Jackie attend Goreville School and graduated from GHS in 1970.  He attended Rend Lake College and received an Associate Degree in Mining.

     He was married to Paula Jones on August 25, 1972, at Buncombe.  Paula has taught at Buncombe School for 22 years.  Their children are Jennifer, 18, and Jesse, 13.

     Jack has worked 21 years at Old Ben Coal Company #26.

     In June, Jack and Paula opened their new business called Scenic Ridge Gas Station and Convenience Store and Three Mile Hill Restaurant at the I-57 Exit 40, 3 miles west of Goreville, open 24 hours every day. On Sundays, Jack makes delicious chicken and dumplings.

    Jack is a member of the United Mine Workers Union, the Masonic Lodge and The Shriners.

     Jackie lists his hobby as working.

     The third annual Grandparents’ Day was held at the local school, where the bleachers and chairs were filled.

     Shirley Franklin of Farmer’s City drove 230 miles and won the award for traveling the farthest to be with her grands, Jackie and Abby Shouffler.

     Having the most grandchildren in the Goreville School were Pat and Bud Eastman, with eight:  Janelle Craig;  Danielle, Stephanie, Courtney, and Bridgett Eastman; and Jacob, Jonah and Gabriel Eastman.

     The oldest grandparent was Afton Henard at 89, the guest of Ronnie and Matt Zelck and Kasey Coonce.  She has a total of 57 grands and greats.

     The youngest grandparent was Robert Foshee, grandfather of Michael Dieffenback.

     And so it was, on September 20,1995, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
