LOOKING BACK October 14, 1992

     In the October 14, 1992, edition of the local newspaper, was pictured the winners of the third Fiddle and Banjo Contest, sponsored by the village of Goreville on Oct. 2, in the downtown village pavilion.

     Participants arrived from as far away as Draffenville, Ky.  First place winners were from Mt. Vernon and Thompsonville.  

     The volunteer firemen served a ham and bean lunch and supper, across the street from the contest as a fundraiser.  

     Harvey Anderson, co-ordinator of the event, said he was thankful for the variety of contestants and the large crowd that attended.

     Seen on page 3 was “Future Leaders of Tomorrow” sponsored by Walker’s Home Supply, that included photos of the following youngsters and the names of their parents: Nicky, 14, and Eddy, 11–Eddie and Joni Foster.  John Harrison, 2–Luther and Cindy Wheaton.  Ashton Barger, 2, and Dustin Pulley, 3–grandchildren of Norma and Stanley Barger.  Joshua, 7, and Zachary, 5–Frank and Michele Sullivan.  Adam, 13, Erin, 10, Justin, 5–Robert and Tracy Dawes.  James, 6, and Dakota, 3 months–Donald and Pamela Runge.  Cassie, 3–David and Leann Stafford.  Tiffany, 7, and Billy, 4–Tim and Carmen Simmons.  Lucas, 4–Rick and Judy Nannie.  Courtney Dawn, 7, and Ethan Ray, 4–Delmar and Tami Burlison.  Kristopher, 7, and Melissa, 5–George and Kammy Davis,  Eric, 3, and Michael, 2–Eric and Donna Whittington.  Garrett Lee, 2–David and Jane Runge.  Amanda Lynn, 7, and Adam Michael, 5–Robert and Peggy Francis.  Micki Beth, 7, and Raleigh, 4–Mike and Sharon Walker.

     County September marriage licenses included that of Cecil H. Hall, 63, and Bonnie Easley, 54, both of Goreville.

     Last week’s Mystery Photo was identified as David Hall, with Jeff Smith’s name being drawn from those of Dean Newton, Bill Durham and Cheryl Newton.  Jeff was the winner of a lunch plate special from the Dinner Bell Restaurant, compliments of Meredith Funeral Home.

     David Dwayne Hall was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 9, 1952, to Charles Dwayne and Audrey Cooler Hall.

     He has a twin sister, Debbie Keeling of Goreville, a brother, Kevin Charles Hall of Georgia, and a half-sister, Diane Smith of Georgia.

     David attended Goreville schools and graduated from GHS in 1972.  He attended Shawnee Community College.

     He served in the U.S. Army in 1972-74.  He served 18 months in Germany as an artillery repairman.

     He has worked at Bonanza  and Long John Silver in Marion; for Joe McNally in Herrin; Patton Co. in Marion; and is now self-employed as a painter and tree trimmer.

     His hobbies are “chasin’ women” and “drinkin’ coffee”.

     The annual Fall Festival was held on Saturday night, along with a dance from 8-11pm with music provided by DJ Brian King.

     VFW Post 2581 and the Ladies Auxiliary will meet on Oct. 10 at 7pm at the Goreville Senior Center.

     And so it was, on October 14, 1992, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
