LOOKING BACK March 31, 1993
By Dixie Terry
Let’s take a step back in time to March 31, 1993, and read “Round the Lake” and see what was going on.
“The new moon sails high above the bare branched trees these early spring nights and finally we had a glorious weekend with sunshine two days in a row.
The trees are budding out slowly and I couldn’t wait to see the forsythia in bloom, so I broke off some branches and brought them indoors, where they opened up the next day.
The crocuses and daffodils have been pushing through the earth for several weeks now, but none bloominig in our yard where hardly anything grows. The lilac bush has some tiny buds and shows signs of reviving from its Winter sleep.
When I let the cat out early each morning before daybreak, the air is still nippy, but there’s a touch of fresh Spring air and the songbirds are in full concert, just before sunrise.
The fishing tournament on the lake on Sunday brought out a multitude of boats and the lake was busy all weekend, with pontoons out in nuimber on Sunday aftetnoon loaded with sightseers. Sorry to say, our pontoon is still tied to the boat dock, awaiting a new motor, since ours was stolen while in Winter storage, Yes, we have a paddle, but somehow, that doesn’t get my enthusuam up. I prefer a faster ride.
The Carolina wrens have returned from where ever they spend their Winters and hopefully they won’t attempt to nest on the front door wreath like last year.
Yhe squirrels have finally learned to use their feeder, but they still continue to enjoy the bird feed.
A large flock of coots spent a morning in our cove last week, diving and bobbing on the high waves created by the north wind. Duchess, our duck, was being chased by three mallards and the yard is full of robins, a sure sign of Spring.
I didn’t receive the weekly ifshing report since all the fishermen were too busy getting ready for the tournament. I did ask a couple of fishermen near our boat dock about their catches. One said “Great!” holding up a stringer of crappie, enough to feed a bunch.
On Friday, three of our grandkids, Ashleigh, Jamie and Nathan, came down while their mom and dad were out for a few hours. My favorite husband sent out word that no one was to visit on Saturday, his day to “do taxes”. However, on Sunday, two families arrived, one for lunch, one for supper, and some of our aunts and uncles, who enjoyed coffee and chocolate cake in the afternoon.
Finally, a decent day to wash vsehicles and our son, Jay, with a little persuasion, cleaned three of our mud-splattered vehicles and even vacuumed the inide of mine.
My mother and I were in Cypress on Wednesday at Linda’s Beauty Shop. We enjoyed visiting with an old friend, Rhudell Mulkey Childers, now of CapeGirardeau, . She had a beauty shop in Cypress for forty years, and then in Mounds, and remembers many Goreville ladies came to her shop before Norma Lee Durham opened her shop in Goreville.
Wedding and shower invitations are arriving often for this season of Spring,” when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love!”
