LOOKING BACK June 15, 1996

Pictured was Jan Anderson, who following 28 years of service at Goreville School, retired on May 11. She began in the library, then the kindergarten, as a secretary, and finally, since 1985, as supervisor in the cafeteria. A retirement dinner was held on May 30 at Western Sizzlin’ Steakhouse and on June 2, she was given a reception at the school.
The Goreville Chapter Order of Eastern Star held an open house on June 23 to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
Michel Scott of Anna was guest speaker, recently. at the Goreville Senior Center to share the story of the “Trail of Tears.”
Pictured was Jason Billingsley of GHS, who has been selected as an “All-American Scholar.” He is the son of Jerry and Janet Billingsley and the grandson of Louise and the late Kent Billingsley of Buncombe, and the late Homer and Velma Anderson of Vienna.
Pictured were Tyler Parrish and Lance Merchant, standing in snow on Pike’s Peak, where they were traveling with Lance’s grandparents, Marilyn and Chuck Webb of Goreville.
The village board is conducting a survey on the possibility of a city-wide trash removal.
Lynn Schuetz, Goreville, was pictured with her class at Rend Lake College Allied Health Dept. at their pinning ceremony.
Jim Flick of California has spent two weeks here visiting his sister, Helen Massey and family, their first time together for 23 years.
Erick Alfonzo Diaz, 27, formerly of Goreville, died on June 15, as the result of an auto accident. He is a 1986 graduate of GHS. He was an electrical engineer and a former musician with “Living Daylight.” He leaves his wife, Susan and step-children. as well as his grandfather of Miami. Funeral services were held at Whitnel Funeral Chapel and burial was at Cedar Grove Cemetery near Buncombe.
Nine residents identified last week’s Mystery Photo, who was Carl Kelley. The name of Mary Moore was drawn from those of Bill Durham, Jeff Smith, Ramona Craig, Jackie McCabe, Linda Stearns, Cecile Morgan, Bill Stearns and Roger Craig. Mary was the winner of two plate lunch specials from “The Dinner Bell Restaurant” of downtown Goreville, compliments of Johnson Siding and Windows.
Alvah Carl Kelley was born in a home delivery on a Goreville farm on August 14, 1941, to Alvah and Martha Collier Kelley. He has a brother, William Ray Kelley of St. Peters, Mo.
Carl attended Cana Country School and graduated from Goreville High in 1959.
He attended SIU-C majoring in Agricultural Education and received a Bachelor’s Degree in 1967.
Carl was married to Myrtle Dunn in Cypress on August 18, 1961. Their children are Steve Kelley and Diane Mayfield.
Carl has taught school for 33 years, beginning at Egyptian School, Ramsey, Waltonville, and Goreville.
He is a member of Johnson County Farm Bureau, Saline Masonic Lodge, Illinois Vocation Association and Agriculture Teachers Association.
His hobbies include raising livestock, fishing, hunting, touring and sightseeing.
And so it was, in Goreville and Johnson County.
