LOOKING BACK June 12, 1992

In the June 12, 1992, edition of the local newspaper, was news of the new cookbook created by the Goreville Ruritan Club. Called “The Goreville Galloping Gourmet”, it contains 440 recipes, provided by local cooks. The cookbook will be available at the 4th of July celebration. Proceeds will go to the proposed community center for Goreville.
Pictured was County Clerk Jerry Simmons in a not-so-fun situation. His office had mailed out 7000 voter registration cards and over a thousand were returned. He is spending time compiling a new voters list.
The Howard Reunion was held on May 25 at Ferne Clyffe State Park, following the decoration at the Howard Cemetery.
On Flag Day, June 14, the VFW Post #2581 performed a flag ceremony at Eagle Point Bay to honor veterans.
The Joe Martin family identified the Mystery Photo of last week, who was Val Gean Harris. He was born in a home delivery in Goreville, on July 5, 1937, to Troy and Ruby Zimmerman Harris.
He has seven sisters and five brothers.
Dawn Perkins has been named to the Dean’s List at Blackburn College. She is a 1989 graduate of Goreville High School. Dawn is majoring in Computer Science and Written Communications. Her parents are Marlis and Robert Perkins of Eagle Point Bay.
In the obituaries was Cairl Craig, 85, who died on June 13, at his residence. He was born May 4, 1907, near Goreville, the son of John and Minnie Thornton Craig. In 1929, he married Velma Lee Robertson, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Delbert and Roger Craig, both of Goreville; brothers, Fonso of West Frankfort; Bill of Benton; and two sisters, Opal and Edna Craig, both of Benton. There are three grandchildren: Robert, Gilbert and Linda, all of Goreville. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery.
County Treasurer, Claude Harper, who has served in that capacity for 22 years, tendered his resignation, to be effective on Aug. 3, 1992, at the Johnson County board meeting. The board is now obliged to appoint a person from the Republican party to serve in Harper’s position.
And so it was, on June 17, 1992, in Goreville and Johnson County.
