Step back in time twenty-five years ago to January 12, 2000, and take a look at The Goreville Gazette.
A front page story and photo tell of the burning of the home of Pauline Vaughn at 904 Broadway on the north edge of Goreville. The fire began about 3:30am and no one was at home. The cause is undetermined pending further investigation.
Should there be a snow or ice storm predicted, the school officials will inform parents of school closures via local radio or television.
These Goreville art students toured the St. Louis Art Museum to view the Masks of Culture Exhibit: Bethany Jones, Ashleigh Kellums, Tosha Massey, Connie Vicari, Josh Pritchett, Jeff Triest, Brandi Funberg, Jessica Mesker, Leah Smith, Jeff Funberg, Jonah Atkins, Jackie Landreth, and Kelly Holderfield.
The winner of the “Whole Hog Christmas Raffle” of the Merry-Makers 4-H Club was Deb Curly.
Congratulations to Theb Sexton, son of Karen Boner, who made the Dean’s List at SIU-C in the engineering department.
Mont and Patsy Bishop are the proud parents of a son, Morgan Willis, who arrived on January 5. Their other sons are Mason Kyle and Tyler Scott. Grandparents are Carolyn Morgan and Beverly and Dale Bishop.
The 55 Plus group of the RLDS Church met at “The Jolly Red Pig” in Vienna for their monthly breakfast on Saturday.
Happy wedding anniversary to Doyle and Shirley Coonce on January 11.
Retired Illinois State Senator Paul Simon will speak at the Goreville School PTA on Feb. 3. Please plan to attend.
From the column, “Remembering When” came this historical information: “In the late 1800s, the village of Goreville was in existence, but had not been incorporated. That act was legally and officially done in a small ceremony on July 5, 1900.”
Citizens who had built homes or businesses prior to 1899 were: William Terry, Thomas Morgan, M.D., Thomas McCormick, Will Newlin, Franklin Parrish, Scott Rendleman, Mark Stanley, William Threet, James Jones, Jake Treece, and Nora Downing.
Six residents solved the Photo Mystery of last week, who was Kerri Lynn Henley. The name of Sharon-Peggy Jennings was drawn from those of Josh Luke, Mary Luke, Mary E. Moore, Ronald Stroud and Greg Sullivan. Peggy was the winner of one month’s internet service from Son Data Systems.
Kerri Lynn Henley was born on Sept. 2, 1974, at Marion Memorial Memorial Hospital to Wessley and Mary Jane Green Henley. She has three older sisters, Gayla, Goreville; Cindy, Springfield; and Ginger, Paducah.
Kerry attended Goreville schools and graduated from GHS in 1992. She then attended John A. Logan College and graduated with a Doctor’s Assistant Degree in 1995.
Kerri was married to Ryan Falmier in June, 1996, at the First Baptist Church of Goreville.
Kerri is employed by Dr. Tim Davis at the Southern Illinois Orthopedic Clinic in Carbondale.
She is a member of the First Baptist Church of Goreville.
Kerri’s hobbies are shopping and bowling.
The Eagle House Ministries is sponsoring the “5th Quarter” after high school basketball games on Friday and Saturday nights. All high school students can enjoy playing games and refreshments, held at different area churches, with adult supervision.
And so it was, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt, on January 12, 2000.
