Looking Back

LOOKING BACK February 9, 2000

By Dixie Terry

Seen on the front page of the February 9, 2000. edition of the Goreville Gazette was a photo of State Representative Larry Woolard with former U.S. Senator Paul Simon and Goreville Mayor Bill Durham.  Simon had been the featured speaker at the local PTA meeting on Feb. 3.

Congratulations to Mike and Marcia Johnson Tripp on their new son, Perry Evan, who arrived on Feb. 2.

Out at the Lake of Egypt, several flocks of ducks, geese, and ring-necked gulls were spotted out on the ski area, bouncing on the waves created by the northeast wind.  Two eagles were also seen, perched on separate limbs near McKinney Chapel Church.

Debbie Retz, PTA President, had sent out word, far and wide, of the upcoming appearance of Paul Simon who would speak at the recent PTA meeting.   However, with a basketball game between Vienna and Goreville in the other gym, it took a chunk of attendees away,  Since it was Debbie’s birthday, Simon and the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to her.

Prior to the meeting, Simon and wife, Jeanne, and their long-time friends, Donna and Barry Eastman, enjoyed dinner at the Late Bloomers Restaurant in downtown Goreville.

The men of the Goreville United Methodist Church serve a pancake breakfast each first Saturday of the month, that brings out a crowd.  The public is welcomed.

The First Pentecostal Church broke ground last Saturday to begin the building of their new church building north of town.

Two long-time sweethearts are celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day.  Congratulations to Betty and Hugh Hiller!

The Junior High Blackcats played their last basketball game of the season at the Regional Tournament at Pope County.  Sorry to say, they played a good game, but lost,  Handling the scoring were:  Chris Parmley–23.  Shane McGuire–5.  Derek Sisk–3.  Danny Montgomery–15.  Josh Sullivan–4.

Two correct identities out of three guesses were made for last week’s Mystery Photo.  Lloyd Craig, Jr’s name was drawn from that also containing that of Mary E. Moore. Craig won a large pizza from Dad’s Pizza for identifying Gina Craig.

Gina Ralene Craig was born on Feb. 4, 1965, at Marion Memorial Hospital to Mike and Lily Kelley Craig.  She has a brother, David, of Goreville.

Gina attended Goreville schools and graduated fom GHS in 1983.

Gina was married to Terry Phalin on May 28, 1983.  Their children are Charity, 13, qnd Caleb, 10..

She has worked at City Care in Anna, and as a home care housekeeper.

Gina is a member of Lick Creek Pentecostal Church, where she has been the nursery teacher for 7 years.

Gina’s hobbies are reading and working with children.

Pictured were Lillian (Escue) and Henry Terry, who will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on February 6.  They have a daughter, Fern Hermann of Paducah, and five grandchildren: Terry Peas, Creal Springs.  Gene Peas, Goreville.  Larry Peas, Creal Springs.  Mary Vaughn, Paducah, and Stephan Hermann, Makanda.  They also have eleven great-grands and two great-great grands. They will host an open house  at the Goreville United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2-5pm, for friends and relatives.

And so it was, on February 9, 2000, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
