From the August 28, 1996, issue of The Goreville Gazette comes this news: The Cache River State Natural Area, containing 11,194 acres and owned and managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, composed of two units along the Cache River in Pulaski and Johnson Counties, will be open for public hunting.
Hunters will be required to sign in and out at access boxes in the adjacent parking lots.
Congratulations to Bill and Juanita Kelley, who celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on August 26.
Sammy Gene Martin of New Orleans, called his grandmother, Reanna Martin, to see how she was feeling. He is the son of Betty and Lowell Martin.
Michael Retz, son of Debbie and Ken Retz, turned twelve years old on Aug. 27 and enjoyed cake and ice cream, with family members, at the home of his grandparents, Helen and Wendell Stokes.
Cecile Morgan hosted a family fish fry, featuring catfish caught by Cecile and her son, Darrell Burlison, who was the chef.
The descendants of Lewis and Clara Brandon Diefenbach will hold a reunion Sept. 1 at the Patton Shelter on Route 13, near Harrisburg.
Free blood pressure screening will be held at the Goreville Magna Bank for members of the Magna 55 Group on Sept. 3, 10 am to noon, with refreshments.
Pictured was Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Richard J. Zucco, son of Sharon Zucco of Goreville. He served on the amphibious assault ship, the USS Tarawa, where Marines of the 13th Expeditionary Unit hit the beach in Thailand as part of Exercise Cobra Gold 16. Zucco and the Tarawa will return to San Diego this fall.
The Johnson County Board of Commissioners voted not to access boat docks on the 1996 property taxes, payable in 1997.
Beginning on Sunday, Sept. 1, Gabby’s Bar-be-que will begin closing each Sunday, so the Williams family and their employees can attend church services and have a day of rest.
Darrell’s Barber Shop offered haircuts at $6 with no appointments necessary.
The obituary of Nova L. Brumitt, 88, of Kankakee was seen. She was born on Nov. 26, 1907, in Goreville, to Theodore and Amanda Geust Burlison. She married Lora A. Brummitt on Aug. 19, 1926 in Goreville. He passed away on Oct. 29, 1964. She leaves one son, two daughters, 6 grandchildren annd 11 great-grands and many nieces and nephews.
A benefit gospel sing will be held for Edward “Ray” West on Sept. 7 at 7pm at Busby Chapel Chiurch. Three residents identified last week’s “Mystery Photo,” who was Nancy Brewer. The name of Lloyd Craig was drawn from those of Daphene Sullivan and Bea Wood. Lloyd won a $10 floral arrangement from “Special Occasions.”
Nancy Patrick was born in Elgin, Il. on Oct. 7, 1963, to Gary and Judy Laseman Patrick. She has a sister, Karen, of Goreville.
Nancy attended Crainville Grade School and Goreville Grade School and graduated from GHS in 1981. She was married to Chris Brewer on Jan. 7, 1983, at Mt. Zion Church. They have a son, Justin, age 8. Nancy has worked at The Longhorn, Triple E, Monroe Cleaners, Fox’s Flower Shop, and Goreville City Hall.
She has returned to college, attending SIU-C, and will graduate in May, 1997. Nancy attends Grange Hall Church. Her hobbies include horseback riding and camping.

The Johnson County Democratic Women will meet on Aug. 29 at the Democrat Headquarters in Vienna, with Rep. David Phelps as guest speaker. And so it was, on Aug. 28, 1996. in Goreville and Johnson County.
