LOOKING BACK April 19, 1995

     In the April 19, 1995, edition of the Goreville newspaper, was pictured the GHS prom royalty candidates:  Sharon Jackson, Tara Dorsey, Kim Pritchett, Brenda Schuetz, David Hilton, Jeff Johnson, Tim Gower, and Grant Stanley.

     The prom will take place at the SIU Rec Center on April 22 at 8pm.

     The Top Gun Program for students that have excelled, from across Johnson County, will be held in the GHS gym on April 24, for students in Grades 5-12.  The public will donate U. S. Savings Bonds, cash, checks and new merchandise for the drawing.

     State Beta Club Conference winners from GHS included Jason Billingsley, who was a 2nd place winner in the General Knowledge Competition.  First Place winners in the talent competition were Anne Pfeffer, Trina Dunn and Dana Franklin. These students will compete in June in Orlando at th National Beta Conference.

     Sophomores from Goreville who will receive special recognition for their grade point average at SIU-C are Kira Jack and Lora Roach.

     Ron and Billie Case had 20 family members join them for an Easter Sunday dinner.

     Jeff and June Thornton enjoyed a visit from their daughter, Becky and husband, Mickey Blakely, and their daughters, Leah and Cora,  of Kentucky, over the holiday weekend.

     Della Sullivan had her family, including greats and grands, down to Happy Hollow for Easter dinner. 

     Tom and Sandy Lively celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary with dinner at Red Lobster.

 on April 18.

     Greg Sullivan turned 39 and celebrated at The Dinner Bell with his coffee-drinking buddies and a Dolly Parton cake.

     Kevin and Sonja Detwiler and their family of puppets will entertain on April 19 at the Lick Creek Pentecostal Church, for young and old kids.

     Eagle Point  Bay Association will serve up pancakes with bacon and sausage on April 22, a benefit for the Security and Beach Patrol.  Tickets are $3.50 with the under-12 age eating for free.

     Last week’s Mystery Photo was Vernon Marshall identified by Bill Durham and Daphene Sullivan, whose name was drawn as the winner of 25 patio blocks from Goreville Concrete.

     Vernon Edward Marshall was born in a Carbondale Hospital on Dec. 17, 1946, to Earl (Bud) and Evelyn Walker Marshall.  He has a brother, Gary, of Fillmore, and twin sisters, Fay Brown and Kay Girtman, both of Goreville.

     Vernon attended Logan School in Marion and Goreville Schools, graduating in 1965.  He has attended college classes with Chrysler Outboard, heavy equipment in Marion, and welding at Shawnee College.

     Vernon was married to Linda Jolly on June 22, 1974 in Corinth at the Number 8 Church, by his grandfather,  the Rev. Oral Walker,  Their children are Michelle, 19, and Brad, 15.

     Vernon worked for Amax Coal Co. and on construction, currently with Massman Construction of Kansas City, Mo. at Smithland, Ky.  He has been a member of Local 318 Heavy Equipment Operator since 1970.

     He attends the Full Gospel Church.

     His hobbies are drinking coffee and watching and attending sports events.

     And so it was, on April 19, 1995, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
