Looking Back

LOOKING BACK February 11, 1998

By Dixie Terry

In the February 11, 1998, edition of the local newspaper, the Johnson County candidates were pictured at the Lake of Egypt Association of Property Owners (LEAPO) meeting.  They included:  Elry Faulkner for sheriff; Bill Goss for county commissioner; Carolyn McGill, for treasurer; Tom Murrie, for county commissioner; Katrina Treat, for county clerk; Robin Harper-Whitehead, for county clerk; and Dorla Hyatt, a LEAPO board member, who coordinated the event at the Eagle Point Bay Association Building.

The village board met on Feb. 2 at the village hall, with Mayor Durham calling the meeting to order.  These trustees were present:  Charlene Baity, Frank Sullivan, Larry Vaughn, Brent Schierbaum, Steve Benard.  Also present were Police Chief David Leach, Water/Sewer Dept–Mike Wise; Fire Dept—Kenny Swisher; Treas.–Judy Maze. Clerk Beverly Henson was absent with Deputy Clerk Baity taking the minutes.

Good news for the RobinWoods subdivision , who now have a chance to have Lake of Egypt water, after years of waiting.  The project will cost $428,000, with an upcoming bond issue to raise the funding.

At David’s Jewelry, on Broadway, was being offered a “real rose dipped in real gold” ready for Valentine’s Day giving.

Ben and Sharon Edwards, Don and Lawanda Billingsley and Mary Jane Henley have returned from a cruise to the Bahamas.

Congratulations to Betty and Hugh Hiller, who will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary on February 14.

In the marriage license applications were these from Goreville:  George Wallace Umberger, 56, and Cheryl Lee Beaver, 52.  Brian Wade Smith, 24,  and Jennifer J. Hendee, 25.

Last week’s “Mystery Photo,” was a difficult one, with only two guesses, and one being correct, that of Robert Travelstead, who identified Kenny McDonald as the Mystery Person.  Robert won two Sunday dinners from 3-Mile Restaurant at Scenic Ridge, west of Goreville.

Kenneth Eugene McDonald, Jr. was born in Herrin Hospital on Nov. 10, 1976, to Kenneth Eugene, Sr. and Nancy Sue Imboden McDonald.  Kenny has one sister, Jennifer Diane.

He attended Crab Orchard schools and graduated from C. O. High School in 1995.  He then attended John A. Logan College studying law enforcement.

He was married to Genny Lynn Terry on June 28, 1997, at the First Baptist Church of Goreville.

Kenny has worked at Target, Sonic Drive In, Gilster-Mary Lee, Chariot Marine, Bombardier, and is currently employed at Century Propane in Goreville.

He is a member of the Goreville Fire Department, Johnson County 911 Service, and the Bethel Baptist Church.

Kenny lists his hobbies as horseback riding, training horses and antique model cars.

And so it was, on February 11, 1998, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
