     Good-Bye February!  Welcome to March!

     Here’s hoping that Miss March is better behaved, weatherwise, than Mr. February was.

     Coming up in the new month will be Mardi Gras on the 4th, also known as Fat Tuesday, followed by Ash Wednesday on the 5th, the first day of the Lenten Season.  Daylight Savings Time arrives on the 9th, with Saint Patrick’s Day on the 17th and the 20th will welcome the first day of Spring!  What a busy month!

     A Full Moon, The Full Earthworm Moon will appear on the evening of the 14th and a new moon will rise on the 29th.  Native American tribes also had names for the March moon, that included Full Eagle Moon, Full Sore Eye Moon, Full Sugar Moon and Full Strong Wind Moon.

     March is named for the Roman God of War, Mars.  This was the time of year to resume military campaigns, that had been interrupted by the Winter season.

     Have you noticed?  Days are getting longer; the birds are beginning to migrate northward; daffodils are starting to push through the soil; all an indication that Spring is on the way,

     Local high schools have been celebrating National F.F.A. Week during Feb. 15-22.

     The Illinois Dept. of Public Health has celebrated American Heart Month during February.

     Some special days to recognize this last week of February include:Feb. 25–Chili Day,  Feb. 26–Tell A Fairy Tale Day.  Feb. 27–Retro Day and Blast From the Past Day.  Feb. 28–Tooth Fairy Day and Floral Design Day.

     A Youth Revival will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, at 7pm at the First Pentecostal Church of Goreville.  Refreshments will be served following the worship service.  All area youngsters are invited.

     All area ladies are invited to attend the Family Consumer Science Conference, set for Thursday, March 6, at the L-Atrium of Shawnee Community College.  Registration forms are available at the U, of I. Extension Office in Vienna.  There will be guest speakers, classes on interesting subjects, a catered lunch, and much more.

     Shoppers!  The “Shoppaloosa” will take place at the Marion Pavilion on Saturday, March 1, 10am to 5pm, with over 100 vendors showing and selling their wares  indoors.  You can also pet the alpacas and take advantage of the food trucks,

     The Hub Recreation Center on West Main Street in Marion will host a farmers’ market on Friday, March 7, 3-6pm in the gym.  The market will feature an array of crafts, produce, baked goods, from across Southern Illinois,  Food trucks will be parked outside at 4-7pm.

     The annual Academy Awards Show will be seen on Sunday, March 2, at 7pm on ABC-TV.

     “Into the Woods” will be onstage at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center on Feb. 28-Mar.2 at 7pm.”Mikado” will be seen on March 12.  Tickets can be ordered at mccc.com.

     On March 8, Rodney Carrington will appear at the Carson Center in Paducah.  On March 14, “A Taste of Ireland” can be enjoyed there.

     The next blood drive of the American Red Cross at the Fellowship Baptist Church will be on Monday, March 17 at 12-6pm  Please give!

     The Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society  will hold their first meeting of the new season on Sunday, March 16 at 2:30pm at the Vienna City Library.  Two new board members, Faith Haney and Cody Mathis, along with other board members will provide the program with a “Show  and Tell” presentation.  The public is urged to attend.

     On Feb. 17, the ladies of the Vienna Food Pantry delivered 60 floral arrangements for the residents of Hillview Senior Living and Rehab.  What a nice gesture!

     The River-to-River Trail Society welcomes hikers on their Saturday, March 8 hike at Grindstaff Hollow in Gallatin County.  Call 618-499-9629 to make reservations for this free event.  Meet at 10am at the High Knob Lookout parking lot.  Check out their website at rivertorivertrail.net for more.

     The Hub Recreational Center in Marion will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a celebration for the public  in March.  Stay tuned for details,

     Mardi Gras will be celebrated for the 60th year at Our Lady of Mt, Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin with a pasta dinner and a carnival beginning at 4pm on Fat Tuesday, March 4.  The public is welcome.  Tickets can be purchased at [email protected].

     Volunteers from the Lake of Egypt Christian Church in Sunset Harbor are working this week at the Thrift Shop of the Goreville Ministerial Alliance on Feb. 25 and 27 and Mar. 1.  Shopping hours are: Tuesday and Thursday at 9am to 4pm and Saturday, 9am to noon.  This is a great place for bargain hunters!
