Looking Back

LOOKING BACK February 2, 2000

By Dixie Terry

In the February 2, 2000, edition of the Goreville Gazette was seen a photo of a house trailer fire, on Jan. 23, located south of Goreville on Farris Lane.  The owner was Debbie Farris, who was at work at the time of the fire.  The fire was responded to at 10am by the Goreville Fire Dept.  At 6pm the fire engulfed the trailer again and was a total loss.  The cause was undetermined.

Pictured were Junior and Rosie Craig, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 28.  The couple was married in 1958 in Herrin.  Rosie is retired from Choate Mental Health in Anna.  Junior is retired from Or-pack Stone in Herrin.  Their children are Leonard Craig, Goreville, and Karen Sugituan of Cleveland, Ohio.  They have four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Over 600 pounds of canned goods and processed food were collected by the local schools to help the hungry, sponsored by the Johnson/Massac/Pope County USDA Agriculture Council and area schools.  Mrs. Carroll’s 6th grade class collected the most food, which was delivered to the Goreville Food Pantry on Dec. 17.  Pictured were Vivian Watkins, Goreville Food Pantry; Jan Southard, Beta Club sponsor; and Mike Smith, FSA, USDA.

Hello World!  Brent and Keesha Schuetz are pleased to announce the arrival of their son, Zane Reed, born on Dec. 23, 1999, at Marion Memorial Hospital.  He was welcomed home by his big brother, Noah, age 2.  Grandparents are: Homer, Jr. and Barbara Schuetz, Goreville and Phil and Ray Jones of Arkansas.  Great-grandparents are Homer and Roberta Schuetz, Goreville.  Great-great grandmother is Della Sullivan, Goreville.  Great-grandparents are Richard and Betty Ferguson, Bay, Arkansas, and Jim and Gwen Hancock.      The Goreville United Methodist Church, as well as the village of Goreville, will be celebrating its centennial this year.  Seen at Forget-Me-Not’s Flowers and Gifts in downtown Goreville are commemorative sets of plates and cups of the church.  Hurry!  They will go fast!

The GHS class of 1949 got together on Jan. 26 at the Western Sizzlin’ Steak House in Marion with these attending:  Anna Mae Jones Bargesser and husband, Carl, of Mt. Vernon;  Berniece Short Conekin and husband, Albert, Carterville;  David Martin and wife, Norm, Vienna;  CC Foster and wife, Barbara, Goreville; and Wayne Cox and wife, Judy, Marion.  Lots of good food and catching up were enjoyed.

All guesses of the Mystery Photo of last week were incorrect, so the correct identity, Vonda Carlton, won the prize of two Sunday dinners at the 3-Mile Restaurant at Scenic Ridge, west of Goreville.

Vonda Rae Johnson was born on June 2, 1966, at Marion Memorial Hospital to Lavon and Sharon Hinckle Johnson of Goreville.

She has a brother, Jody, of Goreville.

Vonda attended Goreville schools and graduated from GHS in1984.  She attended Shawnee Community College, receiving an Associate in Science  Degree.  She graduated from SIU-C in 1987 with an Associate Degree in Physical Therapy.
