JOHNSON COUNTY HCE FEB MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Johnson County Home and Community Education (HCE) was held at 9 am on Thursday, February 6, at the Tunnel Hill Community of Christ Church fellowship hall.
The meeting was called to order by President Natalie Webb Dougherty. Present were: Faye Mize, Phyllis Webb, Dixie Terry, Rosemary Rouse and newly appointed board members, Linda Kuykendall, 1st vice-president; Lisa King, and international chair.
Other new board members are: Arlene Dueker, cultural enrichment chair and Bonnie Hogue, community outreach chair, who were unable to attend.
The IAHCE State Conference will be coming up on March 11-13 at the Effingham Holiday Inn. Natalie, Phyllis and Rosemary will be attending the full conference, with Arlene attending on Tuesday, and possibly others going on separate days. Natalie and Rosemary will be voting delegates from Johnson County.
The HCE annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 22, with a potluck dinner at 6:30pm, followed by a business meeting and the installment of board officers.
The financial report was provided by Betty Yandell, who was absent, and was approved for filing and auditing.
The January minutes were presented by Secretary Rosemary Rouse and approved for filing.
Phyllis Webb will pick up can tabs at the U. of I. Extension office on Tuesday, Feb. 25, to be delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Nashville on March 2.
Arlene Dueker had provided a listing of upcoming area events for February and March, along with a craft idea for a leprechaun hat. She also gave a brief book report on ” Story of an Orphan Train Hatmaker” by Nancy Menees Hardesty.
Lisa King reported that the International Night event will be on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30pm with South Africa being the subject.
Faye Mize reported on the scholarship project, with the essay deadline being Feb. 14 by VHS and GHS seniors who are applying for a scholarship. The scholarship luncheon will be held on April 3, at 11:30am, at the Community of Christ Church fellowship hall.
Fay also told of the planned coach trips being offered to the public: New York City on June 26–July 2. Boston on July 22-30. Mackinac Island on Sept. 8-11. Faye can be contacted for information and reservations at 618-771-0066.
Bonnie Hogue sent word of the next American Red Cross Blood Drive, that will be held on Monday, March 7, noon to 6pm, at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna. Several HCE members volunteer there every other month.
The HCE board sponsored a chili supper at a basketball game at GHS in December and another at a VHS basketball game in February. These were fundraisers for the scholarship project.
The next board meeting will be on March 14 at 9am at the Community of Christ Church fellowship hall, rather than the U. of I Extension building, where the free tax preparations are being held.
February HCE unit meetings are as follows: Longview–Feb. 17 at 9am at the U. of I Extension Building. Ozark–Feb. 18 at 9am at the U. of I. Extension building. Tunnel Hill– Feb. 24 at 7pm at the Community of Christ Church fellowship hall,
