LOOKING BACK May 19, 1993

     Seen in the May 19, 1993, edition of the local newspaper was a photo of Boy Scout Troop 5 members, who had planted flowers in downtown Goreville.  Shown were: Brandon Dempsey, Christopher Gage, Seibert Tregoning, Jeff Triest, Eric Waterhouse, Michael Retz, and Scout Leaders, Ken Retz and Tim Gage.

     A Bike-A-Thon sponsored by the Senior Beta Club of GHS was held as a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Hospital .  Steven Craig, a 4th grader, raised $162, donated by sponsors. and was the winner of a new bicycle, provided by the Beta Club and Wal-Mart.  Steven’s parents are Robert and Jo Ann Craig.

     The 8th grade class of 1993 was pictured in a two-page spread provided by local businesses. The graduates include:  Christy Bozman, Ginger Dorsey, Lisa Peas, Yvonne Isbell, Christy Poole, Spring Adams, Mandy Kellums, Shelly Battles, Nickolas Billingsley, Jason Williams, Shawn King, Kevin Phelps, Jennifer Nickerson, Tina Williams, Jason Billingsley, Dana Franklin, Daniel Reed, Ben Korte, Brian Webb, Travis Foster, Jeremy Townzen, John Oakes, Steven Hans, Lacey Ferguson, Shanna Watkins, Lisa Roach, Casey Triest, Libby Watkins, Danielle Eastman, Molly McKinney, Johnie Billingsley, Kim Mighell, Jennifer Robinson, Willie Childers, Sara Smith, Brad Marshall, Nathan Elders, and Mindy Reid. 

     Charlene’s Beauty Salon  announces their grand re-opening by owner Charlene Hodge.

     Dale and Lois Billingsley have returned from a trip to Midwest City, Oklahoma, where they visited their daughter, Paula and her husband, Charles Atwood, over Mothers’ Day weekend.

     June Dunn visited her daughter, Christy, and her husband, Mike Smith and their new baby, Cody.  She returned with lots of photos of the new arrival.

     Seven residents had the correct identity of last week’s Mystery Photo, who was Wanda Harris.  The name of David Terry was drawn from those of Sherry Durham, Clarence Perry, Lois Hancock, Bill Durham, Jeff Smith  Barbara Soulsby.

     David won two dinners from Gabby’s Bar-B-Que, compliments of Whitnel Funeral Home.

     Wanda Harris was born on June 1, 1947, to Hollis and Evelyn Harrison.  Her brothers are Hollis, Jr, of Elkville; Ervin, Carbondale; John, Murphysboro; and her sister is Lou Eva of St. Louis.

     Wanda attended Carbondale schools and graduated from high school in 1965.  She attended John A. Logan College.  

     Wanda was married to Val Gean Harris of Goreville in 1967.  Their children are Rhonda Gibson, Becky Harris and Tracy Harris, all of Goreville.  Their grandchildren are:  Christopher, 6; Rachel, 4; Matthew, 3; and Tarin, 15 months.

     Wanda worked at Regal Motel in Marion; Arrowhead Homes in California; and is presently employed at Holiday Inn in Marion.  

     Her hobby is playing with her grandchildren.

     An academic reception was held at the Goreville Grade School on May 10 honoring those who had achieved high honors in grades 3-8.

     And so it was, on May 19, 1993, in Goreville.
