LOOKING BACK September 4, 1996

From the September 4, 1996, issue of the Goreville Gazette, comes this:  “School has begun!  This is one of the best school year beginnings that I can remember”, said Principal Pam Reuscher.  “Never before have we been able to begin school and stay cool.  The new air conditioners have certainly been wonderful the past few days.”     

New school employees include:  Regina Hill, cafeteria supervisor.  Cindy Harner, junior high teacher. Tammy Reynolds, Laura Hood and Donna Whittington as teacher aides.     

August marriage applications include:  Terry Lynn Watkins, 47, and Barbara Sue Webb, 43, both of Goreville.     

Kim Lingle Delgado was given a baby shower at the home of her sister, Tammy Lingle, for the new baby of Kim and Bennie Delgado, Landon.  Kim’s mother, Brenda Lingle, traveled to Goreville from Branson, Mo. to visit her parents, Ernest and Clara Faye Perry and her children, Tammy and Dustin Lingle and grandson Brennan.     

At least fifty  former students and family members attended the Cedar Grove School reunion held at the Goreville Senior Center on Saturday.     

A giant flea market will be held at Scenic Ridge 3-Mile Hill Restaurant and. Citgo Gas Station on I-57 Exit 40 on Sept. 7-8,, 9 am to 5 pm.     

Dad’s Pizza offers cheap decor, lousy service and excellent pizza!     

Four residents had the correct identity of last week’s mystery photo, who was Mark Herren.  The name of Daphene Sullivan was drawn from those of LaVerne Underwood, Clarence Perry and Mary Moore,  Daphene was the winner of two plate lunches from the Dinner Bell Restaurant in Goreville.     

Mark Allen Herren was born on Dec. 25, 1968, in the Union County Hospital of Anna to Randy and Rita Wheaton Herren.     

He attended Goreville Grade School and graduated from Goreville High School in 1987.     

Mark was married to Johnna Brewer on July 6, 1991, at the First Baptist Church of Goreville.  Their son is Derek Allen, age 2.     

Mark has worked at Goreville Food Market, Florsheim Shoe Factory in Anna,  and for his present employer, Orpack-Stone, of Herrin, for 4 years.     

He is a member of the I.A.M Union and the Goreville Baptist Church. His hobby is riding 3-wheelers.     

A photo of Shawnee Community College Licensed Practical Nursing Program Class of 1996, was shown, with Tonya Altenberger of Goreville as one of the graduates.

State Representative David Phelps has announced several road contracts and projects, including a scenic overlook off Interstate 57, 2.5 miles west of Goreville.

Lake Egypt Fire Protection District will offer a CPR Class on Sept. 12-13, 6:30-9:30 pm at a cost of $6.     A barn and garage moving sale of Bob snd Ruby McCall at 2320 Lake Rosd will be held on Sept. 13-14.   

And so it was, on September 4, 1996, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
