Welcome September!     

This month is named for the Latin word, “septem,” meaning seven, since this was the seventh month of the early Roman calendar.

Look for the “Harvest Moon” on Sept. 16-18, that can occur in either Sept. or Oct. depending on how the Lunar Cycle lines up with the Gregorian calendar.

September is “National Potato Month,” so celebrate with your favorite potato dishes.

Any child, five years old or younger, can be signed up online to receive a free book, beginning on Sept. 1, that will be shipped to their home.  Visit the website of “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.”

Senior citizens in the Goreville area can take advantage of the “Book Borrowing Program,” by stopping in at the Senior Citizens Center at 204 South Broadway Street, 11 am to 12 noon Mon.-Fri. for free books, to read and return, free of charge.  For more, call 618-658-8140.

The 20th Veterans on Parade will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10 am in downtown Marion.  All veterans, military groups, community organizations are urged to participate in the parade. Registration is requested by calling 314-375-7170, 618-967-9415 or email edward2791@att,net. 

On Friday, Sept. 13, the “Stone Temple Pilots” will perform at the Moiuntain Dew Park in Marion.  Order tickets at thrillbillies.com.

Eagle House Ministries will present “Word in Worship” on Sept. 13, 6-8 pm at the Vienna City Park amphitheatre.  Four Christian bands will be performing.  This is free!

The 4th annual “Art Stroll” will take place in Carterville on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10am-3pm in the historic downtown.  This will be a fundraiser for “Strong Survivors.”

The 13th Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois will get underway on Sept. 10, with 103 veterans heading to Washington. D.C. for a full day of touring the military memorials.  A welcome home celebration will begin around 5 pm at the Veterans Memorial Airport near Marion.

The Crab Orchard National Wilslife Refuge will host a “Butterfly Roundup” on  Sept. 14, 10 am to noon.  This is free, but reservations are a must by calling ahead.

The annual “Hunting and Fishing Days” will be held at John A. Logan College on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29, with free admisssion and events for all ages.

The fall “Rekindling the Spirit Youth Rally” will be held at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna on Sept. 18, at 6:30 pm. for all area youth.

The Murphysboro Apple Festival will be held on Sept. 11-14, with activities for the entire family.

The 75th anniversary of Ferne Clyffe State Park will get underway on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a rain date of Oct. 5.  Guided hikes will begin at 9 am with guest speakers at 11 am and activities all day.  Food by the GHS Beta Club will be for sale, as well as commemorative coins.

“Freedom Sings USA” will hold a presentation on Sept. 7, at 6:30pm, on Tower Square Plaza in Marion.  The public is asked to bring lawn chairs and hear local veterans share their story in song.

The 29th annual “Cache River Days” will be underway  at the Ullin City Park on Sept. 5-8, with the theme, “Moon Over the Cache,”  The parade will be at 11 am on Saturday.  There will be ongoing activities all four days. 

The Marion Cultural and Civic Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary iin the structure on Tower Square Plaza, following the burning of the original building.  Contact marionccc.com for upcoming events.

The “Friends of Morris Library” of SIU-C will hold a fundraiser at the Student Union Center Ballrooms on Saturday, Sept. 7, 5:30-9:30 pm.  There will be live music by “The Phonics,” an appetizer course, a buffet dinner, catered by Hunan, and much more.  Make reservations at 618-453-1815.

A “Patriot Day Car Show” will be held on Sept. 14, 11am to 1pm, at 1517 East DeYoung Street in Marion, with proceeds going to the “Wounded Warrior Project.” Entertainment, food, and more will be underway.

The “Run For Hope” 10K, 5K and Kids’ Fun Run will be held on Sept. 27 at the Tunnel Hill State Trail, adjacent to the Vienna City Park.  Contact eaglehouseministries.com to register.

Volunteers of the Vienna Baptist Church will welcome shoppers at the  Faith Alive Thrift Shop in Vienna, on Sept. 5-6-7.  Drop in for bargains galore!

The Goreville Ministerial Alliance Thrift Shop is now offering fall and winter merchandise.  Volunteers from the Lake of Egypt Christian Church will be working on Sept. 3-5-7.

Happy Grandparents Day on Sept. 8 to all grands and gramps!

Rain or shine, the annual Ozark, Illinois Fall Community Rummage Sales will be underway on Sept. 6-7 opening at 7 am.

A Senior Citizen Expo will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 9-11 am at the Carbondal Civic Center on Illinois Avenue.  Another Senior Citizen Expo will get underway on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at The HUB Recreation Center in Marion on West Main Street.

The “Bundles of Joy” drive is on, sponsored by The Southern Seven Health Department, who are holding a Diaper Drive to celebrate “National Diaper AwarenessWeek” on Sept. 23-29. The generous public is asked to bring monetary gifts or diapers to either The Dollar General Store or the Family Dollar Store in Vienna on Sept. 20 at 2-6 pm or Sept. 21, 10am-2pm.

Friends and family are invited to the annual Francis/Pyle Famuly Reunion to be held on October 5 at the Francis Farm of Lorna and Steve Francis, at rural Goreville.
