Although we are still enjoying Summer, Autumn is approaching, set to arrive on Sunday, Sept. 21.
The changing of the foliage is just beginning on some species of trees. However, it will be several weeks before we will see the orange, scarlet and brown leaves on our local trees.
. Watch for the wooley-bear caterpillar. who supposedly predicts the weather of the upcoming winter season. The wider the rusty-brown section, the milder the Winter . The wider the black section, the more severe will be the weather, We shall see!
It’s pumpkin time! To check for a ripe pumpkin, give it a thump and listen for a hollow sound.
The Monarch butterflies are soon to begin their annual migration. It may take five generations for the Monarch to complete a migration to the deep south, flying over 3000 miles, with the sun as a guide. They will travel about 50 miles per day, arriving in Texas and Mexico, where they will hibernate over the Winter months.
The “Rekindling the Spirit Youth Rally” will be held on Wednesday. Sept. 18 at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna. Food will be served at 6:30 pm with the worship service to begin at 7pm. The speaker will be Daniel Dover of Anna. Anna Money will present a testimony. Worship service will be presented by Elizabeth Pennebaker of Kevil, Ky. All area youth are welcomed, as well as their grownups.
Dolly Parton’s “Imagination Library” is already serving almost 5000 youngsters in Southern Illinois. Any youngster, 5 years old and younger, can receive a free book delivered to their home, by going online at the “Imagination Library” website.
September has been designated as “National Library Card Sign-Up Month”.
Patriot Day was observed on Sept. 11, with American flags flying, as a reminder of that sad day of 9-11.
Sept. 20 was observed as National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
Sept. 29 will be recognized as “Gold Star Mothers'” Day.
The Daniel Chapman Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) held their first meeting of the new club year on Monday, Sept. 9, at 6 pm with a dinner, followed by a business meeting, held at the Tunnel Hill Community of Christ Church.
Constitution Week is being observed on Sept. 17-21 across the land, with a “Bell Ringing Ceremony” held on Tuesday on the lawn of the Vienna City Library.
This year is the 126th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. All the Johnson County schools were supplied with posters and literature to share in their classes. A special display was at the Vienna Library of period clothing and needlework.

The 13th Veterans Honor Flight of Southern illinois was held on Sept. 10, with 103 veterans enjoying the flight to Washington, D.C for a full day of touring the military memorials. They returned to the Veterans Airport near Marion around 9pm to be met by hundreds gathered for the “Welcome Home Ceremony”.
The annual “Hunting and Fishing Days” will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29 at John A. Logan College, with activities for all ages.
Keep in mind the 75th anniversary of Ferne Clyffe becoming a state park, with an all-day celebration in the park, where guided hikes, guest speakers. food by the GHS Beta Club ,and much more will be underway on Saturday, Sept. 21. Commemoration coins will also be for sale as a souvenir.
The annual Art Stroll will take place in historic downtown Carterville on Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 am to 3pm with live music, food choices, and of course, plenty of art to see and purchase. This is a fundraiser for “Strong Survivors.”
A Senior Citizen Expo will be open on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 9-11am at the Carbondale Civic Center. On Wednesday, Sept. 25, there will be another Senior Expo at The Hub in Marion, also at 9-11am. All area senior citizens are urged to attend these free expos and receive free gifts, food, and more.
National Diaper Need Awareness Week will be observed on Sept. 23-29. with “Bundles of Joy” a diaper drive by Southern 7 Health Department to be underway. Donate diapers or monetary gifts on Sept. 20, 2-6pm at the Vienna Dollar General Store and on Sept.21, 10am to 2pm at the Family Dollar Store.
the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Bookmobile offers free books to borrow and return to senior citizens in Goreville at the Senior Center on Broadway. Take as many as you wish and keep them as long as needed and return them for another supply. Pickup at 11am, to noon on Mon.-Fri.
The Marion Cultural and Civic Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary in its “new” structure on Tower Square Plaza. Numerous events will be taking place onstage, so check it out online at marionccc.com.
