JOHNSON COUNTY CELEBRATES HCE WEEK

By Dixie Terry

     The Johnson County Home and Community Education (HCE) will recognize and celebrate National HCE Week on October 14-18.

     The Illinois Association of Home and Community Education is celebrating its 100th birthday this year and doing quite well for its age.  The motto for this year is “Diamonds are forever and so is HCE!”

     HCE Week is being celebrated across Illinois with any number of events.

     In Johnson County,  the HCE board will present baked breads and homemade cookies to the staff of the University of Illinois Extension at the Vienna office, to show our appreciation for all they do,

     HCE has been known by more than one name in its century of existence, starting out as Home Bureau.

     In our county, we will celebrate with International Night, highlighting Malaysia, with food of that country served at a potluck dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6:30pm.

     The guest speaker will be Janel Kassing, State International Chair, who was in Malaysia last year at a conference.

     From Juliet Lita Banc came this original “Homemakers Aim,” to have every home:

*   Economically Sound.

*   Mechanically Convenient.

*   Morally Wholesome.

*   Mentally Stimulating.

*   Artistically Satisfying.

*   Physically  Healthful.

*   Socially Responsible.

*   Spiritually Inspiring.

*   Founded Upon Mutual Affection and Respect.

     The Johnson County HCE Board members include: Chairperson Natalie Dougherty.  1st Vice-President Michelle Maze.  2nd Vice-President Kim Collins.  Secretary Rosemary Rouse.  Treasurer Betty Yandell.  Family Living Chair Phyllis Webb.  Cultural Environment and Publicity Chairs Dixie Terry.  Community Outreach Chair Cara Webb.  International, Scholarship and Travel Chairs Faye Mize.

     Any county woman is welcome to become a member of this active group.
