LOOKING BACK April 5, 1995

     In the April 5, 1995, edition of the local newspaper, was pictured Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bird, who will celebrate their golden anniversary on April 13.  They were married by a justice of the peace in Pinckneyville in 1945.  Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren invite you to celebrate with them at the First Baptist Church in Goreville on Saturday, April18, 2-4pm.

     Seen was the Goreville Junior High Regional Scholar Bowl Champions.  High scorer was Theb Sexton of Goreville.  Pictured was the GJHS team:  Andy Bozman, Justin Blue, Patrick Townzen, Coach Lynni Puello, Justin Adams, Stephanie Eastman, Jackie Reed, Theb Sexton, Donna Williams.

     The Village of Goreville enacted an ordinance for animal control in July 1994, which requires rules for responsible dog owners to obey. These will be enforced!

     The Goreville Volunteer Fire Department will receive a grant of $4,585 for equipment, from the Rural Community Fire Protection Grant Program.

     Pam Martin Realty offered a 3-bedroom, 2 3/4 baths, fireplace, central vac, large family room, 1-car garage home, on one acre, for $78,000. Sales personnel there included Marsha Billingsley, Rosanna Poole, Phillip Jones, Larry Toler and Leo Froelich.

     The School Talent Show, sponsored by the Beta Club, resulted in these winners:  Grades K- 6–1st.  Krystal Short–2nd.  Leslie Peas–3rd.  Charity Hancock and Allethia Maze–4th.  Grades 7-12–1st.  Trina Dunn, Dana Franklin, and Anne Pfeffer–2nd.  Sarah Smith–3rd.  Andy Hannon–3rd.

     Junior High cheerleaders for 1995-96 were selected:  Veronica Lopez, Brandi Pritchett, Sara Ragain, Trisha Hudson, Samantha Slecka, Amanda Clay, Terri Moss, Melissa Robertson, April Antonacci, and Nicole Harrison, with Barbara Smith as coach.

     There will be a party at Buncombe for Gene Marks, in appreciation of his many years service as mayor, trustee , and volunteer of the village. on April 19, 2-4pm at the Buncombe Senior Center.

     Three residents solved last week’s Mystery Photo, that of June Newton.  The name of Cecile Morgan was drawn from those of Bill Durham and Mary E. Moore.  Cecile won two dinners from the Dinner Bell Restaurant.

     Priscilla June Newton was born in Massac Memorial Hospital on July 23, 1962, to William (Bill) and Wilma June Hines Newton.

     Priscilla June, called June, attended New Simpson Hill School and graduated from Vienna High School in 1980.

     June has two daughters, Melissa Newton and Victoria Beasley.

     June works at Williams’ Quick Mart in downtown Goreville and began there on Jan. 3, 1994.

    She lists her hobbies as crocheting and gardening.

     And so it was, on April 5, 1995, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
