By Dixie Terry

From the Nov. 11, 1992, edition of the local newspaper was seen a photo of Jack Newton of Goreville, who was an instant winner in a Seven-Eleven Store promotion.  Jack was presented a $5000 check by Albert Vace, area manager of Keller Oil Company, and Mary Moore, manager of the Goreville Seven-Eleven Store.

Pictured was new Goreville fire chief, Tim Gage, with assistant fire chief Larry Vaughn and retiring fire chief Jackie Hancock.

Lake Egypt fire department is sponsoring a chili supper on Nov. 14, 11am to 5pm, at station #4, with an all-you-can-eat menu.

Pictured was Dr. Robert McCall, of Goreville, receiving the “Retired Teacher of the Year    Award” from Juanita Whiteside, president of the Johnson County Retired Teacher Association.

The Stokes Family reunion was held at Ferne Clyffe State Park this year, with a crowd who enjoyed great food and a walk down memory lane.

A craft and bake sale will be held at the local school on Nov. 21 at 9am to 1pm, a fundraiser for playground equipment.

Congratulations to Denise Brown and Brannon Byrd, who became engaged Saturday night.

Nichole King celebrated her 8th birthday on Nov. 7 at her Dad’s Pizza place, with lots of friends enjoying food, fun and presents.

Nine residents identified last week’s Mystery Photo, who was Rowena Montgomery, with Daphne Sullivan’s name being drawn from those of: Charles Terry, Helen Stokes, Bea Wood, Lois Hancock, Paul Wood, Mabel Huggins, David Terry and Joe Hancock.

Rowena Montgomery was born in the Herrin Hospital on June 30, 1956, to her parents of the now Lake of Egypt area, John Herman and Louise Turnage Montgomery. She has two brothers, Duco of Goreville, and J.C. of Pulley’s Mill.

She attended Marion schools and graduated from Marion High.

She has four children from previous marriages, Aaron, 15; Sarah, 13; Rindi, 8; and Mandi, 7.

Rowena opened the Long Horn Restaurant in 1976, then moved to Texas and worked at Energy Services in Houston.  She became a realtor and worked at Rainbow Realty in Marion and Pam Martin Realty in Goreville, and then her own, Rowena’s Realty in Goreville. She also sells automobiles.

She is a member of the following: Family With A  Future; Franklin County Crisis Center; So. Il. Coalition for the Homeless: and National Assoc. of Realtors.

She is a member of the Hickory Grove Church.

Her hobbies include horses and participating in roping and breaking horses.

The Goreville State Bank was offering 3.60% interest on 12-month Certificates of Deposit.

At the county board meeting, General Assistance Administrator reported she was not receiving enough interest in the “Earn Fare Program” to pay to keep it in operation.  The board advised her to drop the program.

And so it was, on Nov. 11, 1992, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt.
