Looking Back: October 25, 2000

In the October 25, 2000, edition of the local newspaper, was pictured State Representative Jim Fowler presenting a check for $40,000, a state grant, to the Lake of Egypt Fire Protection Board and Fire Chief Stan Lewis.
Seen on the front page was Miss Sarah Ragain of Goreville, who was crowned Miss Wonder Water on Sept. 26 in Creal Springs.
Essay winners in a competition sponsored by the Shawnee Detachment of the Marine Corps League were these pictured students: Bridget Harrison, Stephanie Starnes and Bethany Lingle, who each won a savings bond and a certificate of merit.
The Johnson County Pre-Election Gospel Sing will again be held, on Nov. 2, at 6:30 p.m., with free admission. These artists will perform: The Pfeifers, Glorylanders, The Challengers and Mark Bundren and Seven Days.
The Lick Creek Pentecostal Church will present a Fall Festival on Oct. 27-29, with local church singing at each session. Everyone is welcomed by Pastor John Boyd.

A “Haunted House” will be underway on Oct. 28, by Goreville Fire and Rescue, with proceeds going for toys for needy children in the area.
The Francis Family Reunion was held on Oct. 14 at Ferne Clyffe State Park with 110 attending. The youngest present was Austin Land, great-great grandson of Vivian and the late Almus Francis and the great-grandson of Aubrey and Donna Francis, and grandson of Aubrey Francis, Jr. and Becky Francis.
Chicken and dumplings will be served at the Goreville Pentecostal Church on Nov. 5, and also at the Goreville United Methodist Church on Nov. 4, when their annual holiday bazaar will be underway all day.
The W3D radio station held a live broadcast in downtown Goreville on Oct. 9 in front of the Late Bloomers Restaurant. Pictured were Wes and Tess of the radio station; Peggy and Ken Wolberg; and owner of the eatery, Shirley Coonce.
The Goreville Brownie Troop will be collecting items for needy infants on Oct. 23-Nov. 6.
The GHS Current Events Class will be holding a “Meet the Candidates” day on Oct. 26 at 8:45 a.m. in the high school gym. Parents have been invited and refreshments will be served. Community members are also welcome.
The Mystery Picture in last week’s paper was incorrectly guessed by all. Jackie Byers, the mystery person, was presented the prize of a pizza from Dad’s Pizza, compliments of Meredith Funeral Home.
After winning the class “S” state softball tournament, the Goreville Junior High Lady Blackcats headed into basketball practice, with their coach of both sports, Rodger Black. Starting out on the right foot, the girls opened their season with a win in the Giant City tournament last Saturday, against Dongola, who was also their final victory in the softball tournament.
And, so it was, in Goreville and Lake of Egypt, on October 25, 2000.
