HCE Board holds October meeting

The Johnson County Home and Community Education (HCE) of the University of Illinois Extension held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m. at the extension building in Vienna.
The meeting was called to order by President Natalie Dougherty.
Also present were: Faye Mize, Ann Ford, Cara Webb, Dixie Terry and Betty Yandell.
Discussed was the July fundraiser, which was a great success.
HCE Week will be recognized on Oct. 10-15, with “International Night” being observed on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the extension building. A dinner, featuring Italian dishes, provided by HCE members, will be served, followed by a video program on Italy, by Faye Mize.
As a salute to HCE Week, snacks will be provided for residents of Autumn Ridge and Hillview Healthcare and to the staff of the U. of I. Extension.
Plans were made for the bake sale, that will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the senior expo sponsored by Arrowleaf and Autumn Ridge, to be held at Fellowship Baptist Church.
The board voted to make a donation to Blessings in a Backpack.
Lessons were planned for 2023 for the HCE unit meetings, that will include: How to Save on Food Shopping; U.S. First Ladies: Financial Emergency Preparedness for Older Adults; Gardening Tips; Fuel to Fight Cancer; Bread Making, in an all-units meeting; Don’t Go It Alone: What to Eat When You Can’t.
The minutes for September were provided by Secretary Ann Ford, and approved for recording.
The financial report was presented by Treasurer Betty Yandell and approved for recording and auditing.
Faye Mize, Travel Chair, shared information on upcoming planned trips to Charleston and Savannah.
Cara Webb, Community Outreach Chair. reported on the Red Cross Blood Drive in September. The next blood drive will be on Nov. 21, noon to 6 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church. Several HCE members volunteer at each blood drive.
Cultural Enrichment Chair Dixie Terry provided an informational hand-out on special days and events in October.
The following unit meetings will be held in October: Longview-Oct. 17-1 p.m. and Ozark-Oct. 18-9 a.m., both at the U. of I. Extension Office. The Tunnel Hill Unit will meet at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Community of Christ Church.
The next board meeting will be held on Nov. 1, at 9 a.m. at the U. of I. extension building.
